Sydney Deville

Sydney Deville

There is only one entry in CWGC records with this name:

DEVILLE, SYDNEY Lance Corporal 33023 27/06/1918 27 Royal Warwickshire Regiment United Kingdom V. C. 44. PERNES BRITISH CEMETERY

Son of John and Sarah Deville of 143 Wyggeston Street, Burnham on Trent. Born at Rolleston, Staffs

The possible connection with Ashton Hayes is not apparent from this record, but he is the right man.

Sidney [sic] Deville was born in 18911

1901: Sydney Deville aged 9 born Rolleston, Staffs, was with his parents John W Deville ‘Gas Stoker’, and Sarah at ‘Gas Avenue’, Rolleston.

1911: ‘Sydney De Ville’ aged 19, Stableman, born Rolleston, Staffs was at ‘The Stables’, Ashton Hayes, Nr Chester. He was in the household of Ernest (? name not clear) Johnson Esq, Wire Manufacturer, and his wife Violet, together with their three children, a nephew, a Governess, eleven servants, and three stablemen.

His entry in the Medal Rolls shows that he was Private 13059 6th Dragoon Guards and apparently later 33023 Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

His card has no further information about him; I can find no other military records for him.

There is no notice of his death in newspapers.

He is buried at Pernes British Cemetery is in the Pas de Calais, France; Pernes-en-Artois is a small town on the main road from Lillers to St. Pol
